English for New Arrivals

The AMEP will teach you more than just English. You will learn about Australian society, culture and customs. You will meet other new arrivals, who may have similar experiences and goals, and you will probably make many new friends.

What is the AMEP?

The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is a government-funded program that provides 510 hours of free English classes to new migrants and refugees.

How to Enrol

  1. Telephone 13 AMES (13 26 37) or visit your local AMES centre, giving your visa number and personal details. Find an AMES site closest to you.
  2. We will determine your eligibility and let you know any costs that may be involved for the course.
  3. We will interview you to assess your English language skills so we can work out the best learning options to suit you.
  4. We will give you information about when you can begin English classes and your rights as an AMEP student.
  5. You choose how you want to study the AMEP: in the classroom, at home, or on our computers at AMES or at  local libraries.

AMES delivers AMEP services on behalf of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. The AMEP is a Commonweath Government program.
