English for New Arrivals
The AMEP will teach you more than just English. You will learn about Australian society, culture and customs. You will meet other new arrivals, who may have similar experiences and goals, and you will probably make many new friends. What is the AMEP?
The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is a government-funded program that provides 510 hours of free English classes to new migrants and refugees.
The AMEP at AMES offers:
- Learning at a classroom close to you, or
- Distance Learning at home with free books and DVDs or
- With a Volunteer Tutor
- Preparation for further education at Universities and TAFEs
- English classes specifically for refugees and humanitarian entrants.
How to Enrol
- Telephone 13 AMES (13 26 37) or visit your local AMES centre, giving your visa number and personal details. Find an AMES site closest to you.

- We will interview you to assess your English language skills so we can work out the best learning options to suit you.
- We will give you information about when you can begin English classes and your rights as an AMEP student.
- You choose how you want to study the AMEP: in the classroom, at home, or on our computers at AMES or at local libraries.
