AMES Australia has been providing settlement services to newly arrived refugees and humanitarian entrants since 2005. Between October 2005 and March 2011, AMES Australia delivered the Integrated Humanitarian Settlement Strategy (IHSS) and assisted almost 20,000 clients to settle across Victoria.
From April 2011, AMES (alongside consortium partners and sub-contractors) began delivering the Humanitarian Settlement Services (HSS) program. HSS is currently funded by the Department of Social Services (DSS).
The AMES Australia HSS Consortium is made up of a number of organisations that provides free support to refugees and humanitarian entrants. As the lead agency, AMES Australia focuses on creating strong partnerships to deliver the HSS program across Victoria.
HSS promotes the skills and knowledge needed for people from refugee and humanitarian backgrounds to begin their new lives in Australia and to build the skills to participate in Australia’s economic and social life.
The services are generally provided for about six months but may be extended in cases of particular need. Take a look at the AMES Australia Settlement video to hear about the settlement journey of refugees and asylum seekers to Australia.
