Volunteer Tutors

Volunteer Tutor at HomeThis is a home-based program where the volunteer tutor visits their student at home to help them learn English and generally understand the Australian way of life. No previous teaching experienced or a second language is required. Tutoring can take place during the day, evening or at weekends.

The commitment is to visit your student once a week for 1 to 2 hours for a minimum of 6 months.

Training Program

AMES provides an initial nationally accredited training course for volunteer tutors. The course offered is TAADEL403A Facilitate Individual Learning which is one of the units of TAA4010A Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

The training is delivered at a variety of locations and times, day and evening, to accommodate tutor availability. It requires attendance at 6 sessions of 2.5 hours — usually once a week for 6 weeks.

To complete Assessment Tasks to achieve the accredited outcome is optional. Assessment Tasks are fully explained during training and relate to work covered in training as well as some of the tutoring experience. Attendance at a 2-hour follow-up workshop is also required.

A comprehensive manual and tutoring resources are provided.

There is no charge for the training and it is expected that volunteers commit to ongoing tutoring by visiting their student once a week for a minimum period of 6 months. The actual details of tutor/student match will be discussed with your local coordinator.

Workshops

Each term we arrange ongoing support for tutors by providing a range of 2-hour workshops. All tutors, experienced and new, are encouraged to attend to get new tutoring ideas and worksheets, learn about the culture and customs of our migrant families and share tutoring experiences with others.

You are welcome to attend at any location. Please reply to secure a place. Some downloadable resources and tutoring ideas are also available under Tutoring Resources.
