After just eight months in Australia and amid the chaos of the COVID-19 lockdown AMES Australia staff at Dandenong have supported a client to find work.

Afghan refugee Liaqat Ali Mohseni has started work this week thanks to support from AMES.

Liaqat's family had to flee their home in Afghanistan because of the conflict there and lived in difficult circumstances in Pakistan for several years.

Liaqat's father came to Australia first and then sponsored the rest of his family to come.

AMES Australia Senior Employment Officer Meenu Malik said Liaqat did not have great English when he arrived. “He is self-taught, but is very hard working and is trying to improve," she said.

“Every time I found a job that was maybe low level and hard work, Liaqat never said no," Meenu said.

“Finally, he has found a job at a pet food shop in Seaford called 'Showmasters'," she said.

Liaqat does not have a car and has to travel by public transport and on foot for an hour and twenty minutes each way to get to work.

Meenu said AMES would provide his with cab charges for a few weeks, so he doesn't need to use public transport during the COVID-19 lockdown and until an alternative solution can be found. Liaqat was also provided with work clothing.

“Liaqat is a 'Stream C' client, so he has the highest number of barriers, but after just eight months in Australia, he has secured a job. He is a very impressive young man who is very polite and a pleasure to work with," Meenu said.
