TH: Hi everyone, my name is Tessa I work with AMES Australia and I manage all of the disability projects. Today I am with my friend and colleague Janet Curtain, can you please introduce yourself.

JC: As Tessa said, my name is Janet Curtain and I have Cerebral Palsy. I live in the West of Melbourne and I have two children and I am also a self-advocate for a self-advocacy group.

TH: Janet, today we are talking because it is the International Day for People with a Disability on the 3rdh of December, which is a really important day for us to be celebrating.  Could you please tell me what this day means to you?

JC: Well international disability day is very important to me because I am a Chinese Australia so that means I feel like I am in a progressive country that knows how to work in the social model of disability and we value people with disability and we listen to what their needs are and we work together in the community. That is what I think the day means, like, to recognise the work that we have done together to make a more inclusive Australia.

TH: Great thanks Janet. I know that you identify as a self-advocate. So, self-advocacy is a term that we use a lot within the disability sector but for people who aren’t involved in disability can you please tell us what self-advocacy is?

JC: Well, self-advocacy is a movement made up of people with disability talking about what their rights are and what services should be doing. It’s a voice it’s a tool to change policy and disability and change attitude towards people with disability. It’s a movement, its people with disability working together to create and promote change.

TH: You run your own self-advocacy organisation can you tell us a little bit about that please?

JC: Yes, so, we found it last year in April and its call Power in Culture and Ethnicity and we stand up for people with a disability from a non-English speaking background. So most of our focus is on disability discrimination and racism so we recognise that there are layers of injustice when we are working with people from a CALD background.

TH: Great, thanks Janet and thanks for speaking with me today and Happy International Day for People with a Disability!

JC: Happy International Disability Day!

Hi

My name is Ardavan Niknam.

The International Day of people with disability is celebrated on 3 December each year internationally.

This is a day for increasing public awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic, and cultural life.

To me, the international day of disability means we should respect the hard work and dedication performed by people with disability.

It means we can promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in society and help them to feel they are equal member of society same others.

I, as a community connector identifying and engaging people with disability and their carers and help them to access the NDIS and use their plan.

We are working in south east of Melbourne including greater Dandenong and Casey. If you need more information, contact me through my email address. My email address is:
