Volunteer Tutors

The majority of AMES Australia Volunteers are involved in the Volunteer Tutor Program. Volunteer Tutors work with newly arrived migrants and refugees to learn English, make links to the community and understand the Australian way of life.

As a Volunteer Tutor you will meet with your client in their home, in a community location or at an AMES Australia centre at a mutually convenient time.

We require Volunteer Tutors to commit to meeting with their client once a week for 1 to 2 hours for a minimum of six months.

What will I be doing as a Volunteer Tutor?

The experiences, tasks and activities of our Volunteer Tutors vary depending on the individual needs of each client. Volunteer Tutors help clients learn English for everyday activities, to understand Australian culture and to establish links to the community. Examples may include:

Teaching English for everyday activities:

  • Public transport
  • Shopping
  • Paying bills
  • Medicare
  • Study options
  • Job search and preparation
  • The workplace

Teaching English associated with the Australian culture:

  • Holidays and celebrations such as Australia Day, Anzac Day, Mother's Day, etc.
  • The Victorian school system - school reports, excursion forms, school newsletters, parent-teacher nights or getting involved in their school community

Teaching English for linking with the community:

  • Finding the location of the local library
  • Exploring services offered by the local council such as school holiday activities, recreation centres etc

Being a Volunteer Tutor is an enjoyable experience and an opportunity to learn about another culture.

Do I need any special skills or training?

We provide an initial comprehensive training program to get started. You will be introduced to our extensive online resources as well as access to the AMES Australia extranet website which is a great way to keep in touch. There are ongoing workshops, support from a Volunteer Tutor Program coordinator and opportunities for social interaction with other volunteers.

Previous teaching experience or a second language are not required. You just need to speak, read and write English confidently and enjoy meeting people from other cultures.
