Skilled Nominated visa (Subclass 190)

This is a points tested visa and skilled migrants who wish to apply for the visa are required to submit an expression of interest and be invited to apply by the Department of Home Affairs.

Who is eligible to apply?

The main criteria is as follows:

  • Be able to score at least 65 points
  • Be nominated by state or territory
  • Receive an invitation from Department of Home Affairs to apply for a 190 visa
  • The main applicant is required to be less than 45 years of age
  • Hold a skills assessment in an occupation in the Medium to Long Term Skills List
  • Have competent English
  • Meet health and character criteria

How do I get nominated by a State or Territory?

The requirements differ based on the chosen State or Territory, as does the application process. Each State and Territory has a unique list of occupations that are eligible based on the skills shortages. They may also impose additional criteria such as the requirement for a minimum level of work experience , higher level of English language proficiency or the requirement to have an employment offer.

What does this visa let you do?

This visa lets you stay in Australia permanently. As you are nominated by a relevant State or Territory, there is a separate commitment to live in that State or Territory for at least two years from the date of arrival.

You can work and study without restriction and enrol in Medicare. You will also be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship in the future if you meet the relevant criteria.
